My mother has been having problems with her computer lately where she would have to hard boot multiple times, well she ran scan disk today and the computer will no longer turn on it says that there is a boot error it states that the FAT file is missing. She is getting a new hard drive but wants to know if she can retreive her files. I have no Idea what to tell her or where to start I would appreciate any help on this matter thank you so much

Have you tried a repair installation, booting from the xp installation
disk - NB this is the repair option, not install.

The winxp installation disk will have that written on it.
If the o/s came loaded with sys. it may be that you have a recovery disk.
Depending on the type of recovery disk this MAY destroy everything!! when it
is used.
There is also the possibility that yr sys. may have a hidden recovery
partition.
What is the make of yr sys? eg Dell or whatever

In that case its allmost certainly a recovery disk, as to if using it will
cause complete data loss, I'm afraid I dont know, you'll have to refer to
your documentation or ask Gateway
