Thanks in advance,

Hi all,

Does someone know a free alternative (or clone) to FastFolders?

About FastFolders:
This system extension increases your productivity dramatically by
giving you quick and easy access to folder contents and files. Without
opening each and every folder, you can browse the directory structure
starting at any point by clicking the right mouse button on a file,
folder or drive. The program adds a menu item to the context menus of
shell objects, which displays the directory structure on demand. If you
drag and drop an object on a folder or drive using the right mouse
button, you can copy or move the object(s) to any folder of your
computer by selecting it from the FastFolders menu.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but its the closes thing I could
relocate.

ShellGem v1.36 (last known freeware version before it went adware) 340
KB

Description: a utility that adds a very neat productivity item to the
current Win95/98 shell-menu. Through this single item you have access to
the complete directory tree of your computer. Open any file or folder -
they are only a click away. There are also file-management functions
built in. Through a user-interface similar to the one you see above you
can move and copy files and folders. You can extract ZIP, RAR, ARJ and
JAR archives. And you can create shortcuts wherever you like. All this
by dragging and dropping the files onto a drive or folder. This
drive/folder then becomes the root item of the menu tree. Start here and
browse your way to your target folder and select it. The operation is
then performed without the need to go through dozens of explorer
windows.

Note: Says its for Win95/98 but it may work on other platforms as well

Hi Zo (and all others),

Thanks for your ping, Zo! I haven't checked the newsgroup for a few days. Indeed, ShellGEM v1.36 is the closest freeware to FastFolders I've tried up to now. Thanks for the tip! As I was despairing to get any reply (before yours), I kept searching and found:

1) a MS PowerToy for Win9x : Sent to X. It adds the following new commands to your "Send To" menu:
- Send To Any Folder
- Send To Clipboard as Contents
- Send To Clipboard as Name
- Send To Command Line
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WUToys/W95PwrToysSet/Default.asp
Pros: simple and efficient
Cons: requires more clicks than with FastFolders (yes, I'm very lazy)

2) a registry hack which adds the following lines in Windows Explorer's right-click menu :
- Copy to folder
- Move to folder
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/tune-22.html
Pros: simple and efficient, works also on Win9x
Cons: no history nor favorites

Thanks! - Eric

I'm afraid the apps below are for launching things (folders, programs, etc.) from the tray, not really what I'm looking for. Thanks for the input though.

Create a new folder on the desktop. Add a shortcut to the folder for
any program you wish to run.

Glad to help out. By the way, I was using it just fine, but now for unknown reasons, it just freezes up on me when I attempt to right click on anything now. Go figure????
(Win98SE) :-(

Hey, Zo, just a guess: It has something in its registry data that it cannot
understand. Have you tried an uninstall-reinstall?

Just an fyi...shellgem is spyware.

I don't have it installed, but did once download it. It admits to being
adware (the v1.3 is what I have records about). Does it connect to an
ad-server, call home, that kind of thing, too?

Hi Karen,

yes, that's the first thing I tried. I finally used one of the registry backups prior to
installing it and it works fine again.

Tiger may be right, because both Ad-aware and Spybot picked up two new Windows Media
registry entries right after installing it, but removal of these entries shows no ill
effects to ShellGem so far and I did not notice any "call home, etc" attempts prior to
removing these two entries.

Strange, that there is no mentioned of this on any of the sites that I found it on,
including CoMa's and SOS. The only highlight made is that it is the last known "freeware"
version(1.36) before it went third party adware as described on the Woundedmoon site. Had
I known this, I certainly would not have recommended it to anyone.

Identified as spyware (web3000) by adaware.

It has to be that they have their information wrong. The version I have
archived, it's 1.3 (1999.02.13), and it's included documentation states
it as adware. Naturally it neglects to mention that it is spyware.

I just now ran an install of it (v 1.3). Most everything looks ok, judging
by my Inctrl logs. Normal CLSID entries for the shell extension aspect.
Spybot gives clean report. Kerio's not asking me any questions. On its
interface, no ads -- except for one reserved space, that right now says
"Hace Advertisement."

However. Looking at the Inctrl logs, I see that it might be harboring its
wickedness for my next reboot.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ShellExt\OOC\ShellGEM.exe " RunOnce
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ShellExt\OOC\ShellGEM.dll.000"

Either the command "shellgem.exe shellgem.dll.000" only does a rename
to shellgem.dll. Else it does something nasty at that point. The file
shellgem.dll.000 is loaded right now, so it won't let me delete it. I
deleted the shellgem.exe. From quick look, poking a few shellgem actions,
it didn't seem to affect it.

Opening the shellgem.dll.000 for view in resource viewer, there is a
notable item. On the Export section, exported DLLs, it says: SEX.DLL.
Sure doesn't look too benign, that.
Had I known this, I certainly would not have recommended it to anyone.

Oh, definitely, that would be dramatically opposite your posting history.
If intentional, I'd figure your nym got hijacked.

Our natural question from here is what freeware offers the features of
FastFolders or ShellGem. I'd have to reread the thread, to see if I could
get what FastFolders is about. Or study over ShellGem, to see if I could
get an idea about what it's primary use is (a quick glance alone is not
enough for. There is such a big old tangle of things going on).

Let me be lazy, before reading or thinking the subject. Is the primary
desired function to do with fly-out submenus on the explorer context-menu
for copy/move to favored locations? If so, then is there any chance File
Targets might serve? It has fewer functions than ShellGem, and it wasn't
a utility I personally felt inclined to try to develop a working relationship
with, but enough people like it to have voted it Pricelessware.

Eric, I don't know anything about FastFolders. But for copy/move menu
from the explorer, let me mention what I found as my favorite freeware
choice. It is the Powerdesk shell extension. This works with multiple
selections. It doesn't have favorites, but it does have a drop-down
history. It gives a large, resizable dialog box, which makes things
very nice when browsing for target locatin.

Its one minor weakness is sometimes it gives an error message on an
attempted move. This was problematic in version v3 and v4. However,
now in v5, it is rare, and seems to come up solely when my desktop
folder is involved (which is in a non-default location, although I
haven't checked if that's where PD has a problem).

I've tried at least five, maybe more, other choices, and it is this
one that I found to be my preffered freeware solution. Now, to get
it, you would need to do some labor. The first part, it's fill our a
registration form. As to whether you have to use a valid email address,
I cannot remember. The next part, it's that you will be downloading
and installing a full 1.6mb suite. That install is largely for the file
manager...

I don't use the Powerdesk file manager. It's their copy/move/filenote
extension that I like and recommend.

I also use the included Find utility. It integrates in the same places
as the normal Windows Find: on the startemnu, and in various places on
the explorer.

Hi all,

Please note that I'm talking about ShellGEM *version 1.36*. I'm a newbie in these security/privacy tracking issues, but here's my experience :
Adaware detected nothing after the installation of ShellGem v1.36 and several reboots. SpyBot only detected the activation of SendUserGUID in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences. BUT I can't tell which software did this as I've installed many and did not run a spyware detector for a while.
No trace of ShellGEM.dll.000 (it probably disappeared on the reboot following the install).
Also no trace of sex.dll in my system.
Finally, as you stated Omega, the only ad I have is a line saying "Hace Advertisement" or something else I forgot.

Should we definitely label this software version (v1.36) as spyware?
