Fastest RAM for a P4B?

Howdy,

I'm putting together a system with a P4B and a P4, 2.4G 400FSB CPU. I'm
got the chip and the board but I'm confused by the choices offered with
the RAM.

Plan is to run either 2000 or XP on the system - I'd appreciate it if
someone would please point me in the right direction for memory.

You don't really have any choice - PC133 SDRAM. The poor P4 will be
bored to death.

According to the manual, the CPU to RAM ratios are 1:1 and 3:4.
With FSB400 (a 100MHz clock multiplied by 4), the 1:1 ratio would
use PC100. The 3:4 ratio works with PC133. Buying CAS2 memory is
faster than CAS3, and these days some suppliers (Crucial) sell those two
types for the same price.

Overclocking the processor is possible, in which case you would use
PC133 memory and set the ratio to 1:1. But most people would probably
prefer to start with a slightly lower core processor, like a 2.0Ghz.
The http://www.cpudatabase.com/CPUdb site only has three entries
for the 2.4GHz/400 Celeron processor and run it at 3.2GHz or more.
The 2.0Ghz/400 Celeron processor has 39 entries and most of them are
for operation at 2.66Ghz or more. (The 1.7 and 1.8Ghz Celerons are
0.18u technology and draw more power, so the 2.0Ghz is the cheapest
and lowest power desktop 0.13u you can get.)
