I have a 56k modem in a new dell laptop and in a dell
desktop. I only have one phone line. I only get, at most,
26.8kbps and this is at slow times. Whats the deal? One
of my friends has 2 lines and gets 36kbps. Why? any info
on how to fix this is appreciated.

p.s. dsl or cable are not available around here.

You are probably limited by the quality of your phone line.
To test, take your laptop to your friend's house and see
what you get there.

The phone co. does not usually guarantee data rates above
some really small value; ISTR 2.4 Kb/s. 26.8 is fairly
good for lots of locations.
