Fast Writes Causes Flashing Polygons In Doom3

Just a head's up to anyone enabling Fast Writes to gain smoother framerates
in WMV9 high-def videos.

On my Athlon64 system with a Soltek K8T800 Pro motherboard and a Radeon
9800Pro, enabling FW causes random flashing polygons to appear onscreen. So
far the problem is limited to Doom3 and Quake1 Tenebrae, both of which use
real-time stencil shadow volumes.

Currently running Catalyst 5.6 with 4-in-1 v4.56. AGP speed is set to 4x.
Tried with VSync on and off, no difference. Could be one of those VIA
quirks.
 
Hmmm... I just checked and I am not experiencing what you described. For
comparison, here are my system specs:

I had a similar problem in Brothers In Arms - I disabled AI to fix it.
 
I've got a mobile athlon (@2580, 215 FSB) on an NF7s v2.0 with 9800 Pro I
don't have any problems with fast writes. I wonder if your 9800 Pro is
overheating. I had similar problems with my 9800 Pro until I removed the
heatsink, cleaned off all the old, dried-out, flaky TIM, put on Artic Silver
III and added an old ball-bearing Pentium fan. The biggest plus is I can now
overclock my 9800 Pro core to 415Mhz with no artifacting.
 
I don't think it's overheating because the flashing polygons disappear
immediately if I disable FW, even when the card is clocked to 9800XT speeds.
I'm using an VGA Silencer Rev3 with silicone paste.
 
Catalyst 4.10. Hmm... that may be the cause. I did try the 4.12 DLL file in
the Doom 3 folder; it made no difference.
 
Ooooops. The system specs.txt file that a copied/pasted from is wrong. I'm
running Cat 5.6, not 4.10.
 
One way or the other. I actually did try the ATIOGLxx.DLL file from the 4.10
package with Doom 3; the flashing polygons remained. Turning off AI,
geometry instancing, bumping up the AGP voltage and even underclocking made
no difference either. Turning off FW immediately solved the problem.

FW will remain off for the time being (at least until the next driver
release). I figured I built a machine to play games, not to watch Microsoft
promo vids.

Can't argue with that logic :) .... and of course, you could always enable
FW when necessity called for it, and then disable it right afterwards.
