Trying to help a friend but don't have a computer here at the moment
that runs XP.

Could someone tell me how to disable XP's Fast Indexing ?

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

Your not referring to the Find Fast Indexer utility in Office, are you?

No, my bad memory as to correct name. Not fast indexing, rather it is
the Indexing Service in Win2K & XP I was meaning.

Shaun's reply gave me the correct answer.

Thanks

Hi

The setting Shaun is referring to disables indexing on that partition only. It
does not disable the "Indexing Service". I see if the indexing service is
running, go to Start - Run and type the following command then press enter.

cmd /k net Start

Is "Indexing Service" on the list?

Thanks for the info. If Indexing Service is on the list, what should I
do next?

You can turn off the Indexing Service completely.

Go to Start - Run - and type the following command then press OK.

services.msc

Scroll down to and double click: Indexing Service
Click the Stop button
In the Startup Type field select Manual of Disabled, then click Apply then OK
After you restart your machine it will stay disabled.
