Fast computer not so fast?

OK, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask everyone
this but here goes. I have what I consider a fast
computer - ASUS P4G8X Deluxe mother board, Pentium 4 2.4
and 1.5 gigabytes of DDR 2100 ram in a dual channel
setup. I also have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card,
overclocked slightly. Problem is, my computer still
skips around while playing games. What gives? My best
guess is that I've got too many things running in the
background and that Windows XP is bogged down, but I
figured that with so much ram that wouldn't be an issue.
Any feedback?

What games is it specifically?

The system should be up to the task of any games. It's not cutting edge
CPU, RAM (speed)wise, but graphics wise it's got a nice little card! 8-)

I'd start with the BIOS, load the optimized settings, put AGP speed on 8x
and enable fast writes, and make sure you've got the latest drivers for your
hardware.

Easiest way to check what other programs are eating up memory or CPU cycles
is to go to the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) have a look on the processes
tab, if anything that's just sat idle is taking up more then say 5% of the
CPU, you might wanna stop it before you play a game.

Hope that helps.
