Hi folks,

I bought an ATI card for the first time over Nvidia, now I'm regretting it.
Why is FarCry continually locking up my machine. I've even tried the
orginal game, 1.1 and 1.2 patch?

I've tried the latest Catalyst drivers as well. Is there such a thing as
the "best" Catalyst drivers to use?

Most likely reason is that you haven't adequately removed the NVidia
drivers/software, smithy.

This is, apparently, a common problem when changing brands, and is
compounded by the fact that neither Ati's nor NVidia's uninstalls
remove the the drivers/software properly.

Best answer is probably to uninstall your Ati drivers (and NVidia ones
if you didn't before) and then clean off any remnants (you can use
cat-uninstaller.exe for Ati, from
http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html. i bekieve
there are various NVidia driver removers, or you can use a driver
cleaner like - Driver Cleaner...

One problem, though, with NVidia cleans on an NForce board, is that it
can be difficult to distinguish between the chipset drivers and
videocard drivers. Probably best to uninstall the lot, clean, and
then reinstall the chipset drivers (before the Ati videocard drivers,
obviously).

Having said that, though, I believe I've seen reports here and
elsewher that Far Cry can be problematic, with or without the patches
(apparently the latest patch just makes things worse? Don't ask me,
not my cup of tea).

As for the best drivers, look through the group for opinions (also
http://www.rage3d.com/board/); but as a rule with Ati, the latest is
best. YMMV. HTH. etc.

I completely agree. I have a 9600 Pro and have no problems with FarCry or
any other game. Then again, I thoroughly uninstalled any previous video
card drivers prior to its installation. Aside from clock speed I believe
the 9600Pro and 9600XT are identical.

Err, question. How warm/hot does your GPU HSF feel
like when gaming? I'm a bit worried how the stock HSF
of my Club3D R9600pro does _barely_ get even warm
(not NEAR burning my fingers when touching it), does
this mean that these run so cool (not overclocked)?

Or is there a possibility of bad contact between the GPU
and HSF? At least HSF of my previous GF3 Ti200 did
got quite hot during gaming, but I keep telling myself it
was old 0.15 micron stuff anyway :-)

Same here. Barely warm. I'm not sure if that's a result of the smaller fab
or, as you say, poor contact with the HSF. I do know that I experience no
lockups or artifacting so I assume that it's still running within a safe
temperature range.

dont use the FarCry 1.2 patch, some have had problems like what you
are having, ATI and FC do get along, try again ~

What kind of motherboard are you using? My BioStar behaved the same way
until I flashed the BIOS which fixed a KNOWN issue with 'some' ATI video
cards.

Abit KT7-Raid w/Amd Tbird proc.

I haven't looked at Bios updated for at least the last 6 months. None
seem to fix anything that was causing me any issues at the time, so I
abstained from the risk of flashing.

Would you happen to have a url re: this known issue?

I would appreciate it :) :)

Tony!
