FAQ for version 509

Mark--

Several of us have noticed and posted that we can't get 509 to install. I
think they have an install problem and I hope Jason J. Joyce [MSFT],
Zachary Gutt [MSFT] Steve Dodson [MSFT] or someone connected will respond to
this. I looked on your page or FAQ to for a contact for you via the page
and didn't see one.

I downloaded MSFT Anti-Sp since it came out. I applied
the first Beta upgrade and there was recently a second
Beta upgrade released at the link below. I installed it
twice (Wizard said successfully). From this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

Here's the confusion that is unfortunately sometimes so
typical of people on the Redmond campus.

1) The link says it will upgrade. It of course does not.

"If you are using a previous version you can simply
upgrade to the refreshed version. The version number of
the refreshed version is 1.0.509. To check the version
number, click About Microsoft AntiSpyware. on the Help
menu."

2)My version stays as Antispyware Beta 1 Microsoft
AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.501.

3) If I need to reboot to complete the upgrade install
there was no information either on the Wizard as their
usually would be or on the download information.

Is anyone having any trouble upgrading to this second
refreshed Beta 1.0.509 because running it several times
doesn't get it changed to that version.

Tia,

Chad Harris

The upgrade worked fine for me and I've seen a few posts where others
have said that the upgrade worked fine for them also.

When an install isn't completing, the following procedure often works.
1) Reboot into SAFE MODE. (Pump the F8 key while the machine boots, then
use the menu.)
2) START> Run...> cmd
3) cleanmgr /sageset:999
4) Uncheck everything except "Temporary Setup Files."
5) cleanmgr /sagerun:999
6) Attempt to install the program again.

I have not seen many issues with people upgrading to build 509. Users who
are running build 501 and upgrade will need to reboot to reset the shell
execute hooks which are in place.

1) Can you tell me what error message you received when you attempted to
upgrade?

2) Something occurred which prevented the install from occurring. Are you
running as an administrator when you attempted to upgrade?

3) I will look into the release notes today and make sure we get something
that states you may need to reboot.

Had previous beta version. Check for updates did not offer
the .509 update, but did offer and install the definitions
update 5691.

Downloaded .509 from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyId=321CD7A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-
DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

Uninstalled previous version from add/remove.
Installed new version. Did not ask for reboot, but worked
fine. My previous settings were remembered (which suggests
that uninstall does not clear these). Check for updates
did find 5691 again and installed it.

No immediately obvious difference from previous version on
my system. XP SP2 all updates.

I had issues upgrading as well and it ended up being my proxy (I'm currently
at work). Through my proxy the download was always the 501 version (size
is 6,379kb). Once I changed proxies, or when I tried on my home machine
without a proxy I was able to download the correct version (size is now the
correct 6,374kb).

This one installed and prompted for a reboot and now shows the correct
version number.

Hope this helps someone else.

I uninstalled the 501 version, deleted the directory it was in,
installed the newly downloaded version, then rebooted. It still says 501.

What the . . . !!

P.S. I still get Error 101 when I try to start it.

I uninstalled again, downloaded it again, installed to a non-standard
directory (E:\Program Files\MSAS\) and it still gives me Error 101.
Then, if I run the following from a batch file:

"e:\Program Files\MSAS\gcasDtServ.exe" -Embedding

I can start it -- but then when its own Setup Wizard starts, I click
"Yes" to Autoupdate, then click "Next," and it freezes. I have to use
Task Manager to shut it down. I've tried rebooting and it doesn't help.

well first input is how come i only got 1.0.501? i only
downloaded today Feb 19, 2005 at about 6:30PM GMT+3?

Check the properties of the downloaded executable--Right click, properties,
digital signatures tab.

I'm in GMT-5, and I get:
Thursday, February 10, 2005 11:20:19 PM

I believe you should see an equivalent time and a date of February 11, if
you have the .509 download.

It would appear that you do not, which points to a problem (still) making
certain that the download servers are all synched with the right files to
download.
