Fan working full (noise &) speed

Dear All,

I have a Compaq notebook (Presario 2700 EA) and
regardless of CPU and memory used, the fan is now working
full speed...which scares me!
Compaq is unable to help me (change it is their answer:
thanks, dude!). Anyone better than them?

The sound that the fan makes has nothing to do with Windows XP. So Compaq's
answer is most likely right.
