fan for 80GB hard disk

Hello NG,

I am going to by an 80 GB Hard disk ( Barracuda 7200.7 ST380011A 80GB
7200u/min 8.5ms or WD800BB 80.0GB 7200u/Minute 2MB or WD800BB 80.0GB
7200u/Minute 2MB).

Do I better need a fan for this???

The 7200 RPM hard drives do generate a bit more heat than
th 5400 RPM ones. If you have a reasonable amount of air flow, a
special fan will not be needed. Try to install it where it has some
separation from other heat producing devices.

If you can get a drive with an 8GB cache, it's probably worth it.

I'd get a Samsung instead.

Really depends on how its mounted.

If its the only hard drive in the bay stack with
a free slot on either side of it with a case with
reasonable airflow, it isnt really necessary.

If you have it right up against another hard
drive it should really have decent airflow
over it to stay cool enough, particularly
with the Barras which do get quite warm.

That's what I got 2 years ago and I don't know when it died, but yesterday
when I opened up my case for the first time since then, I noticed it died.
Probably form dust. My slave 80 gb has hardware monitoring and it's always
at 40 - 45 degrees Celcius and it's right up against my 40gb, both at 7200
rpm. I guess they're ok without a fan.

Maybe in the Summer I'll install another one but these things [fans] are
just so unreliable. I have good airflow in my case though.

Agreed, if you have open space on both sides of the HD and have good air
flow through your case then no extra fans should be needed.

That's what I got 2 years ago and I don't know when it died, but yesterday
when I opened up my case for the first time since then, I noticed it died.
Probably form dust. My slave 80 gb has hardware monitoring and it's always
at 40 - 45 degrees Celcius and it's right up against my 40gb, both at 7200
rpm. I guess they're ok without a fan.

Maybe in the Summer I'll install another one but these things [fans] are
just so unreliable. I have good airflow in my case though.

It's all in what fans they use. A crap fan may last a few months but a
good one might be running a decade later. Also that particular design
makes matters worse by using a 10mm thick fan. For better balance and to
allow adquate room for dual bearings, a fan should be a minimum of 15mm
thick.

It will last longer with adequate cooling. Adequate is relative to the
ambient temp, the case temp, and airflow past the drive.

You should strive to have steady airflow past the drive by either one or
more aux fans (other than the power supply exhaust fan) blowing out the
rear, pulling in air through vent holes directly in front of the drive, or
have a fan actively pushing air past the drive. It doesn't take much
airflow to cool a drive though, if a fan is needed then choose a low-RPM
model.
 
Thanks for the advise Kony. I am going to get a new mobo and new case at
the end of this month. Thinking of a full tower. I'll just trash the dual
HDD cooler junk and mount a 80mm fan in front of the HDD's sucking in.
