Hi,

The fan in my tower doesn't always start to run. When I thouch it with a
scissors or something like that it starts running, but not before. Anybody
knows a solution for this? Or better buy a new one? It seems like it only
starts when I give it manually the initial start.

thanks in advance,

Pieter

If it's an old fan, it probily need a drop of oil in the hole where the
sticker might be covering.

Buy a new fan!!!

If you can't afford one, you can't afford a computer... They're only $5 to
$15.

....of course you didn't say WHICH fan was having a problem.

That sounds like low startup voltage, like it is a 12v fan with only 5-7
volts across it. Fans need higher voltage to start as they age. A fan that
starts with 5-7 volts when new may not when it gets older.

Or, it might just be a flat spot on the bearing, in which case a new fan
is in your future.

Or better buy a new one?

If it's a dual ball bearing fan you'll have to buy a new one, but
sleeve bearing fans (some fans have a ball bearing in front and a
sleeve at the rear, just under the label) may be helped by being lubed
and cleaned. If the fan wasn't oiled enough at the factory, just
adding a drop of oil may be enough, but otherwise you should take it
apart, clean everything, replace any worn thrust washers (plastic ones
sometimes become rough -- hardware stores or electric motor shops have
new ones), and lube bearings and any metal washers.

If you ever manually move a power supply fan, don't use metal since
there are usually high voltage components just on the other side, even
some that you may not expect to have voltage on them, such as some
heatsinks. It's safer to use a chopstick, 100% plastic pen, or
toothbrush handle.

Buy a new one, If problem still exists check voltages.
Either way for the price of a beer youve got a spare fan at least.
