Falsely Reports that Update was Successful

The program recently reported that there was an update available, via a
pop-up near the task-bar notification area.

Problem 1: clicking the "What's New?" link in that dialog does nothing.

Problem 2: when I allowed it to update, it downloaded the file, then started
installation. I recieved a dialog that stated that "The Administrator has
set policies to preven this installation." I am in a normal workgroup, but
was not logged on as an Administrator, so I expected this behavior. BUT -
after dismissing that dialog (OK), I recieved another dialog that said that
the update was SUCCESSFUL and thanked me for updating. The next time I
logged on, I recieved the same update notification, and the same behavior
occured.

Today I recieved a popup window advising me of updates for MicroSoft
AntiSpyware. I loaded it, but when I went to run the MicroSoft antispyware
scan it said my definitions had not been updated in since 10 days ago. I am
concerned that I may have down loaded something that was not from MicroSoft.

I received a popup window in the lower right hand corner of my screen today
advising me of an update to Microsoft AntiSpyware. I loaded it. Then I went
to run Microsoft Antispyware and it said my definitions had not been updated
since 10 days ago. I am concerned I may have down loaded something that was
not from Microsoft.

What was loaded should have been a new version of the beta program code,
rather than definitions. To tell, go to Help, about. Look for program
version 1.0.701. If you see that, you've received the new program code,
with a new expiration date. You should go to File, Check for updates to get
the definition updates.

Thanks
