Earlier this morning I received an email from "Microsoft
Corporation Security Center". The email address listed
was (e-mail address removed). It addressed me
as "MS Partner" and went on to tell me about the most
recent security update. The following is a quote from the
email:
**********************************************************
"This is the latest version of security update,
the "September 2003, Cumulative Patch" update which
eliminates all known security vulnerabilites affecting
Internet Explorer, Outlook and Outlook Express as well as
five newly discovered vulnerabilites, the most serious of
which could allow an attacker to run executable on your
system. This update includes the functionality of all
previously released patches."
**********************************************************
There was an attached .exe file that came with this
email. However I was quite suspicious since I used
Windows update yesterday to install the most recent patch
so I scanned the email for viruses. Sure enough, the .exe
file was infected with the virus called W32.Gibe.B@mm! I
then promptly deleted the entire file.
Has anyone else received a simliar email?
