Since loading Windows XP my local HP4+ printer quits
printing at least a couple of times a day with an "out of
paper" message. The printer has plenty of paper and the
only way I seem to be able to recover is to shut down and
reboot. Any ideas as to what could be the problem.

I am assuming you are using the drivers that shipped on the XP CD. I am not
sure why the system thinks that the printer is out of paper when it is not.
To disable the ability of the spooler to even detect any PJL commands from
the printer, disable bidirectional support on the Ports Tab of Printer
Properties.

Also check the printer cable for kinks or loose pins, something is telling
the spooler that there is no more paper.

I am getting this problem also.

This is a new XP Pro installation, clean install. I log in as admin.

I have a HP DeskJet 540 - the HP website says use the drivers on the
XP CD. Fine.

The wizard doesn't detect the printer, I have to add the printer
manually. (The directions on the HP site said not to use the wizard
anyway).

I've done the install, then the full uninstall found here...

http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article One.htm

both before and after - the printer status says ready, but when I
print a test page or anything from notepad, I eventually get the Out
Of Paper message. (No, I never used the Win2k drivers, just the
drivers on the XP CD. I've tried both the HP DeskJet 540 and HP
DeskJet 540 (Monochrome) drivers. Same results.)

The printer works - I did the self-printer test.

The cabling and everything is FINE - My computer has 2 hard drives. On
my other hard drive is Win98. When I boot into Win98 and print, I
print fine. When I boot into my other harddrive, with XP Pro on it, I
keep getting this Out Of Paper error message. So that rules out a
hardware failure.

I have XP Pro, which came with SP1a if that is any help.

I NEED help printing. I CAN'T print with Win XP. Thanx.

OK, ok, cancel the conspiracy theory...

I had to go into the BIOS and change my Parallel Printer Port to
SPP... then everything prints fine... and I reinstalled all the
security updates, rebooted, reprinted... all still fine...

Funny thing though... my printer STILL isn't listed in the Hardware
Manager...however, it IS listed in the System Information System
Summary\Printing section... so I guess its OK, but why isn't it in the
Hardware Manager...?

Also, I found this
"I had the same problem as you all have been posting with the "Out of
paper" message. It started after I installed the latest XP update of
10-12 Sep 03. I went in and restored my computer to a position 2 days
