When I boot I get a message saying disc failure imminent back up your data
and get a new disc etc. I have windows XP home and a Maxtor 60Gb disc 2
years old

How easy is it to buy a new hard drive, and simply put all my data onto a
brand new disc ( obviously bigger than the current one)

Do I have to re-activate my XP and all the serials etc of my software, and
can I simply "copy" everything as it is with no loss of data

Thank you any ideas appreciated SOON!

It is rather simple to do. To save you from buying anything other than a
new HD, have your local PC wiz replace it for you and at the same time
transfer all your files over. You can do the same thing is you are
comfortable with it. You just need some software like Drive Image or
Ghost etc, to mirror your dying HD.

A 2 year old hard disc about to fail...? I had a similar message (with a
hard disc of similar age with SMART technology) a while back, and, to cut a
long story short, in the end it turned out to be a faulty power supply which
was producing this and other spurious errors. Once that was replaced the
warning message went away. So I would treat your message with caution and
try to corroborate it some way, eg with Norton Disk Doctor or something
similar.

Go to www.powerquest.com and buy/download Drive Image 7 from there. Note
that for it to work properly you MUST have at least 256megs ram so make sure
you have MORE than that. Then, attach that drive and format it and put a
partition of, say a few gigs on it. Now do an image of C to that second
partition. Once finished, replace "C" with current drive, boot off Drive
Image 7 CD and restore the image on the partition to the new "C" and you're
done.

Same here. My HD is about 2 years old, and I started getting the SMART
message predicting a disc failure. I backed up all my data and waited
for doomsday....and it has never happened. I have run disc checks which
turn up nothing untoward, I have no problems with my PC, and after so
long I just ignore the message now. Its a nuisance to keep having to
"press F1 to continue" (booting), but other than that I am confident
there is no problem with my HD.
