What should one do with fake annoying virus pages that make you think that
you are being infected with worms and viruses and must take immediate action
and purchase?

Close them and don't visit them again.

You can also report the URLs to us and we will make sure they are detected and blocked
through various software and methods once they are indentified.

If you do, just make sure you obfuscate the URL such as....

hxxp://bad_site.com
or
h**p://bad_site.com

Add their domains to your hosts file.

127.0.0.1 gotomyprotectedzone.com
127.0.0.1 limestee.net
127.0.0.1 windows-protectonline.net
127.0.0.1 onlinesecurescan.com

etc.

Close them and don't visit them again.

My mom had to give up and reboot the computer as she couldn't get the
warning boxes and pop-ups to go away.

What are the pages after anyways? Is there an antivirus program they want
you to buy, steal a credit card number, or buy a product, or just get money?

It's fun ain't it?

Unplug the computer's network connection next time it happens. Then you
can close all the nasty windows.

You can usually close them with Task Manager.

Using Ctrl-F4 closes the window for me. It's quicker than going to the Task
Manager and/or disconnecting from the Internet.
I am using Win2000Pro.

PS: Anyone have anything against doing it this way? It seems to be
effective.

If your mission is to accept whatever a site offers and only then decide
what to do about it, sure [ctrl] [f4] can whack it. Or... you can
configure your browser (your escort to the net) to not request or allow
such data. And as a consideration, maybe not visit sites that exhibit
that behavior, I mean if there were a store in your town where the
salespersons were always getting in your face to try for a sale, how
inclined would you be to shop there?
I use a hardened Opera v10 to browse and only if a site seems truly
interesting, yet unresponsive, I'll run it sandboxed with everything
enabled. That's got to be frustrating to the hot shot (shit) webmasters
and if more folk adopted my methods they'd be looking for work.

Nope. Like you say, it's the quickest way out. I always used ALT-F4
and figured that's what you meant, but I see now that either will
work. :-)

Thanks, I did mean Alt-F4 but I just tried Ctrl-F4 and it also worked. Go
figure.
