Fake Microsoft E-mails

My power was out for 48 hours due to the hurricane, and
when it came on I checked my e-mail to see I had 56
messages. Half of them were returned e-mails from such
addresses like: (e-mail address removed) which I never sent and
e-mail to to begin with. The other half were Microsoft-
like e-mails telling me about the "September 2003,
Cumulative Patch." It told me to install the attached
file. I scanned the file and it said it didn't have a
virus, but when I clicked to open the file, it was just a
text file stating that it did have a virus but was deleted
before I opened it. When I checked the properties of the e-
mail from Microsoft, it gave me e-mail address like:
(e-mail address removed) or
(e-mail address removed). This is
obviously NOT Microsoft. I don't know why this is targeted
to me (possible cause I posted something to this message
board on Thursday). But people need to be aware of this!

Absolutely right, it is a fake.

The thing to be aware of is that Microsoft never sends out unsolicited file
attachments. Make sure your friends and colleagues are also aware of this.

I have moved house over the last couple of days and have
also received about 95 messages over 2 days saying
either...

ERROR !! MESSAGE NOT DELIVERED DOWNLOAD ATTACHMENT TO SEE
WHY

or DOWN LOAD NEW SECURITY PATCH FROM MICROSOFT!!

I have realised that

1) Microsoft DON'T email such updates.
and
2) Any undelivered message doesn't ask you to download an
attachment to show you why.... its normally included in
the original email.

So have done nothing but delete them...

How do I stop these annoying messages that take lots of
time to receive and then just get deleted?
I have tried blocking via my Zone Alarm... but the are
coming from so many different addresses... its to much!!!

Any ideas please?

Kevin

Try setting up a rule or filter to get rid of them. Set it
to filter out or delete any that aren't specifically
addressed to you, which a lot of those aren't and what
ever other commonalities they have. They don't even hit
my inbox now. I filter them to the deleted items folder
and occasionally check there to see if anything valid got
snagged, then empty it.
Oh, and use a fake email address here and on other forums
or one you don't care about or check often.

I have also been receiving 100s of these annoying e-mails
from supposedly Microsoft and they have contained infected
attachments, which Norton AntiVirus has detected and I
have quaranteened and deleted. This all takes up my time
when I need to work. Cananyone think of a way of stopping
this other than changing my e-mail address. THIS ONLY
HAPPENED AFTER POSTING A MESSAGE ON THIS BOARD A COUPLE OF
DAYS AGO. SOMEONE IS OBVIOUSLY GETTING HOLD OF OUR E-MAIL
ADDRESSES.....
