failure to shut computer down problem

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to fix a problem with
XP Home.

recently I notice that when I shut down - sometimes the shut down screen
will come on - and will stay - my computer does not suto shut off. I noticed
it one morning when I saw the computer still on and the screen saying
something like closing windows. It des not happen all the time - and I have
not been able to detect why it does this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since it doesn't do it all the time, can you correlate anything that you
are doing with the times it doesn't shut down?

In general, for shutdown issues:

1. Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:

2. Go through this shutdown troubleshooter:

3. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]
If you see a lot of User Profile errors, install the MS User Profile

Hi

This probably will not be much help, but my logic says this could even be a
hardware problem.

I was having this problem with my old setup & my old motherboard.

Having since replaced the motherboard & graphics card, but retained the old
hard disc & all programs Etc my computer now shuts down fine.

It could also possibly be the motherboard drivers, as clearly I had to
install fresh drivers for the new motherboard.

I make no suggestions, but perhaps one of the MVPs would like to comment.
