Running MS XP-home on Intel CPU. Have both a CD & DVD drive installed.
Frequently, but not always, when I put a disk in the drive and click
the drive in Explorer I get a message: "Insert a disk in drive X".
Sometimes repeated tries results in success, and other times not.
Anybody got any ideas?

Check of drives in device manager reveals no problelms.

Thanks,
Mike

Probably dirty lasers on the optical drives or dirty CDs. Have you tried a
standard CD cleaning kit?

Are these retail or home burned disks?

A couple of things to try:

Delete the burner and the secondary ide channel (if the burner is on a seperate channel) using the device manager. Reboot see how you go. If no joy try disabling the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, reboot then start the service again, it could handle the situation.

Haven't tried your method but have discovered a fix. Don;t know if it
is permanent or temporary. Open command (DOS) mode. Request a
directory (dir X:\) of the CD or DVD drive. The drive is read and a
correct directory is displayed. Exit command mode and return to
Explorer. Now when I click on the drive the problem is gone. For how
long I don;t yet know.

Thanks for your suggestions,
Mike
