Unlike nt, with 2k Any dc can modify the AD database (add users, change pw,
etc) so if the dc that held the "pdc emulator fsmo role" crashed, and a
restore wasn't successful, then the "pdc role" could be seized by another dc
(not getting into all of the details of this but articles below do). All 2k
dc's are Equal, except that one or more can hold one or more of the 5 fsmo
roles, and those can be moved to other dc's as needed/desired.
To save your AD info you need to have a full backup Including System State.
Ntbackup and all of the others will have some option/selection that will
include teh system state. That is the heart of AD.
Unless the budget is just not there, always recommend having at least two
dc's.
