one of the current viruses/worms will actually prevent
windows update from seeing any needed updates. can you
get to any of the antivirus sites? the virus/worm will
not let you go to most of those sites. if you are
prevented from getting to those sites then if possible, go
to another machine and download the current virus
definitions for the antivirus software you are using, burn
it to a rewritable cd and load it to the infected machine
using the manufacturers directions then run a complete
scan. you may have to run the scan in safe mode. if you
can get to the antivirus sites then your problem probably
isn't a virus/worm. unfortunately, i don't know what else
could be causing your problem. good luck.
oh yeah, if your machine is on a network then you should
disconnect it before running your scan. if there is a
virus/worm found, check the procedures for preventing
reinfection before reconnecting to the network.
