I've downloaded Windows Defender but at the end of the installation process I
get a message Service 'Windows Defender Service' (Win Defend) failed to
start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional SP4 and logged in as the administrator.
Unfortunately my earlier anti spyware version has been sucessfully removed
leaving me without cover. Any advice much accpreciated.

Hi Blueblood!
I cannot help you with solving this issue, you are however not the only one
having problems installing WD on Windows 2000.
I bet that if you go to the services panel and start the Windefend service
there, you will receive the error "the system cannot find the file specified".
See the thread I started on April 24th. named "Defender service error during
installation". I haven't received any usefull answer yet... Guess it's
Windows 2000 related and apparently not much people are installing it on this
OS...
Kind regards,
Eric

Hi Blueblood & Eric-

Same issue here, and I also have a notebook with Win 2000 w/sp4. I
installed Windows Defender on my desktop that has Win XP w/sp2 on it and it's
running with no problems, so I tend to agree that it's an issue with Win
2000. I uninstalled Defender from the laptop until some resolution shows up.

Hi Guys!
Checkout the post "WinDefend Service Failed to start - FIX!?" posted on May
9th. It solved my problem on Windows 2000!!!
Kindest regards,
Eric

This worked for XP

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender
2. Run "MSASCui.exe"
3. You will see a window saying that Windows Defender is not running. (Sorry, I don't remember the exact wording)
4. Click on the part at the end of the message that looks like a link and says something like "start Windows Defender"

That should do it.
