I cannot log-on to password protected sites through my Windows XP box. I get
the message that cookies are disabled. In response I have set all security
stiings to default. When that didn't work, I lowered my security settings to
"Low" and even "Accept All Cookies." I have added the site to Trusted Sites
in Internet Explorer. I have cleared all cookies and temporary files. I did a
Selective Start Up without SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files, without Startup
Items, Hiding All Microsoft Services and Diasbling All Services. Can anyone
help?

Frank, None of your suggestions worked. I had to use a Windows restore CD.
This is what I did:
1. Click Start -> Run.
2. Copy and pasted following line into "Open" box

Rundll32 Setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

3. Pressed "Enter".
4. Insert Microsoft Windows XP Restore CD-ROM when prompted browsed for i386
folder on the restore CD
5. Laboriously, navigated through cryptic menus and prompts, over writing
newer files with the older ones on my disk, puzzling over the whereabouts of
a file called "iedw.exe" which I finally found at
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\
6. Finally, with no cheers or fanfare I Restarted the computer and my
Internet Explorer worked again.

This has been hell. I suspect that a Windows update did this to me. Do you
have any insights. I'm afraid to download any more.

I have never had a problem with a Windows Update except one a couple years
ago that caused everyone problems in Outlook Express. Nothing recent has
bothered me.
