Hi,

Heres what happens to me I get to the bit after it extracts the files and it
goes to a blank screen for an extended period of time (say 30 mins) then the
loading into windows for the first time (30 mins) then back to blank screen
(30 mins) then finally it went back to install screen from DVD the completing
stage (30 mins) then blank for another hour. So I try and restart it. I
tried to get in under safe modes but they dont work. Got stuck on one of the
drivers diskcrc or something.

Any I also tried the repair option and it identifies a fault but cannot fix
it. Or give meaningful feedback about the fault. Very annoying.

Dont know what to do from here. If I cannot get some help on the web will
be heading back to the store I bought it from.

Which extraction of files? At the beginning before you select the
destination and start the install? You may need to load your video drivers
at the point it asks for drivers. This has been a problem, especially with
certain ATI video cards

No the extraction where it does the full on installation and has the big
green progress bar down the bottom.

Did the repair diagnosis thing on it and the only test it failed was:

Failure while setup is in progress.

Going to try installing some drivers. So you do that when it asks you to
set up the HD right? It has that drivers button. Tried doing it in the
command prompt but they wouldn't run from there.

Oh forgot to say as well have a Leadtek 8800 GT 512MB. I hear there might be
conflicts with those.

I think I need to install video drivers but how do you do that when you
cannot install the OS first?

Thanks John. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

I managed to install the SATA drivers that way. Although I had to run the
exe to extract them on my other computer first. After that I found that if I
let the install run (for about 3 hrs) it finally finished.

Now my problem is Vista runs but takes about 15 minutes to load and runs
really really slowly. Takes about 5 minutes to open my computer.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to speed it I would welcome them. I
have so far installed my motherboard and video card drivers which seem to
have made a small difference.

Try logging on in Safe mode and look at the logging. See which drivers, if
any, are hanging. Since it lists the last loaded driver, it is the next one
listed after a hang that is the culprit. If it is hanging after driver
load, check your installed programs to see if any are incompatible. Did you
do a clean install or upgrade from another version?

Incidentally, many drivers do not load in safe mode, so if you boot into
safe mode in a normal speed, you should go thru any drivers carefully and
see if they are up to date. There are several sites that will do a free
scan of your drivers and make suggestions for updates, but all will charge
for downloads from their sites and more specifics, but it can be a start.
