I have a hardrive that failed recently. I moved it into a slave position
but I my PC will not recognize it. I can see it on my device manager but it
is not assigned a drive letter and cannot be seen via explorer. Also, it
makes a terrible knocking sound. I am confident that it is trashed but
would like to salvage it and at least try to reformat if possible. I don't
know why it failed, virus or other reason.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Knocking sound is a pretty good sign it's dead.
You might check the power supply voltage levels to confirm
there's no problem there, but otherwise trying to reuse it
is just masochism.

It has failed. That's means it's not recoverable (except thru a VERY
expensive professional process.) Hope you had backed everything up prior.
