The default page in IE6 that comes up when I type a bad URL is now something
I don't like. How do I change it back to just show "Page not found"?

Danny Deger

Bring up iexplorer select tools then internet options. In the box at the top
type the web site you want to come up when you bring up the internet
explorer. Have a good one. Later

I am not looking into how to set the home page. What I need is how to
change the page that comes up when I type a bad URL in the address portion
of IE.

When you post a text message about a problem, you need to give a detailed description of the what you are seeing. Your message may as well say "I'm having a problem, how do I fix it."

What does the page look like that you are seeing now, when you type a bad URL?
What is showing in the Address Bar when this page appears?
Have you installed any third party toolbars or other browser add-ons?
Have you made any changes to the IE6 settings?

You also posted this message to 2 newsgroups that do not exist.

Just as you don't need to know what my current home page is to tell me how
to control it, I don't see why you need to know the page I currently get
when I type a bad URL to tell me how to control this feature. Either I have
control of this feature or I don't.

On toolbars and addons, I have an 11 year old daughter who isn't as careful
as I would like:-) She probably did something on the web and allowed this
to happen.

I added the other groups back in. They exist.

I don't believe microsoft.public.inetexplorer exits on the MS news
server! I know that it exists elsewhere however (Google Groups, my
cavtel.net news server). Same with
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie6.browser . Weird!

I know that microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general is a bona fide MS
newsgroup.

Danny, if you would like us to help you, it would indeed help if you
answered our questions. Ronnie asked appropriate questions; your answers
will help determine his (or others') suggestions to you.

The content of your bad-URL page will likely have an important clue as
to how to solve your problem! Whether or not you are directed to another
URL could provide another clue. Could be a hijack, could be a toolbar,
could be a plug-in setting, could be a filtering program you may be
running, could be your Hosts file, could be some adware that needs to be
removed. Could be any number of things!

The current URL is
http://www.quickbrowsersearch.com/s...g7z*Si*T0yQ4mFqBHN-OLo3-5UtamQN5ya2mJO-BDVHME

But I could swear Microsoft put a feature in IE to allow the user to control
where the browser went when it couldn't pull up the requested URL. I
thought I had seen it before.

When I click on that link, I get the "Cannot find server" page. At the
top is an icon of a document with a blue "i" on it. Next to that is "The
page cannot be displayed."

I assume you used to get the same message but no longer do. If so, what
is the exact message you're getting? Do you get forwarded to another
URL?

If not Microsoft, then some application that you have installed is
clearly doing this. With more information, I'm sure we'll be able to
determine the cause.

Ah, looks like spyware (actually, an "adware dropper").

See
http://www.bitdefender.com/VIRUS-121058-en--Application.Adware.NewDotNet.B.Dropper.html :

Application.Adware.NewDotNet.B is a explorer hijacker that adds
subdomains of 'new.net' to you local name resolution system resulting
in the system being to resolve names ending with (.shop,.xxx,.club and
so on). Also when you type in to your adress bar a keyword it enables
searching and redirects you to
http://www.quickbrowsersearch.com/search.cgi and displays results for
you rearch. The problem is that the search page is filled with links to
spyware/adware programs and the results of the search are also sponsored
links that may install spyware/adware on your computer. Also the
sporder.dll library which enables the extended name resolution may cause
system instability and if it is removed manually may disable you
computer's internet connection.

Removal instructions:

The safest way to remove Application.Adware.NewDotNet.B is to use the
add/remove software program list or to launch the uninstaller
automatically wich is located either in Program
FilesNewDotNetuninstallX_xx.exe or WindowsNDNuninstallX_xx.exe) (where
X_xx is the version).

If you try to delete the files manually you will get a error message
since both newdotnetX_xx.dll and sporder.dll are in use.

The page not found file is on the web server of the site you're trying to
get to - you have no control over it.
The web master of the site would have the ability to make custom error pages
like "404 not found" or "500 server" error pages.

There's also a built in one in IE 6 (and (IE7) but I don't know that you can
change it as its part of the application.
