Put a black still picture in the timeline and you can
overlap it with the clip as long as you like.

Sounds like a plan. But where or how does one acquire
a 'black still picture' and how does one 'overlap' a clip?

I've been under the impression that dragging the
left/right handles will not lengthen/shorten the timing
of the clip.

Likewise if you want to vary the length of a fade-in/fade-out on the audio
track, you can use silence. The easiest way to get this is to import any
music clip into MM, drag it to the timeline and mute it.
