Factory installed OS required for software?

Sony has Minidisc/Atrac software, Sonicstage, that states the following
requirement:

FACTORY installed OS (Win98se and up). Not upgraded (like from 98 to XP).
Software will not work on homebuilt computers.

This seems to be true. I could not get software to run (it installed ok) on
my homebuilt AMD computer with WIN98SE complete install.

I have an old PIII HP 8575C with WIN98SE factory installed. The Sony
software works fine there.

My question is, what is the difference between factory installed OS's (like
when you buy a computer from HP or Compaq) and an OS you install yourself
from a complete install disk you can buy when building your own
computer?????

Perhaps there is something I could do to my homebuilt to make it compatible
with Sony's software???

You might check the system properties
of the 2 98SEs and see if one is OEM and the other not.
Right click mycomputer select properties and compare.

I had two problems with the homebuilt.....

The software installed ok.

1) The software would not work correctly with the CD drives. It would run
forever, then sometimes get the number of tracks displayed, but when it did
the CDDB lookup it froze.

2) Whenever I plugged the MD unit to a USB port the programs would freeze.
I don't think this is a software problem, though it could be. I have a lot
of USB stuff hanging off the usb chain. The MD uses USB power when running
and connected. I think I don't have the USB power, and I think I can
correct that.

I don't want to overwrite a working computer with system files from another
computer, so that's out.

Is this an OEM licensed edition of the software? Perhaps
it's a validation check.

What, exactly, does "not get software to run" mean? Be
verbose.

Nothing that should keep software from running.

There certainly is "something" that could be done, but
determing what, and your abilities, might be two obstacles.

Since you have it running on one box, given another box with
same os, one thing you could try is to copy the installation
folder over to the other box, export the registry entries
and merge 'em from working to non-working box. There might
be some files scattered about in the windows folder too,
you'd just have to look around and try it.
