Hi When you start the pc and click F8 ( to start in safe mode ) ,exactly
just what is supposed to happen? I had to start in safe mode the other day
and I did not see anything out of the ordinary. It starts up just like it
does all the time- Perhaps this is the way it is supposed to happen. But,
if I am supposed to see another screen or something telling me that I am in
safe mode, then I am not doing it right or my timing to push F8 is off.
Need to know if Im doing it right.T.I.A

Your timing was off! If you were in safe mode believe me you would know it.
Just keep pressing f8 several times that way you wont need to worry about
your timing.
You will be presented with several boot options
some of the top of my head are
safe mode
safe mode with command prompt
normal start
recovery console (if installed)
setup (stay out of here unless you are changing your bio's features)

Hi,

As mentioned by others, your timing is off. You need to do it precisely at
the moment where the POST ends and just as WinXP begins to load. This will
get you the boot menu where Safe mode is one of the options.

An alternate method to access safe mode is to click start/run, enter
MSCONFIG and click ok. Go to the boot.ini tab and check the "/safeboot"
option. Click apply/ok and it will restart and go directly to safe mode. You
will need to reverse these steps in order to have the machine restart
normally.

If your keyboard is one of those with "enhanced" function
keys, you may need to very quickly press an F-Lock key
before the F8 key works.

Gee thanks to all- Pressing F8 lots of times did it as well as doing it by
'run'- However, I could not get my AVG to load- I would click and click and
finally, a box poped up saying the driver core .....or something like that.
There were only two user accounts to pick from and I tried doing it with
both and AVG would not show the control center so I couldnt scan my system.
Any ideas-please respond

Hi rick
Actually I had a virus that was supposedly in the system
volume area.I did online scans and AVG scans, ad-aware &
pestpatrol scans & I think removed it all. I also did the
stinger scan and nothing showed up. But since I wasnt
doing the safe mode thing correctly,I never did anything
in safe mode. That is where I am now at. I want to MAKE
sure that its out of there and want to scan in safe mode-
I am at my other pc now @ my business and I have the same
pc with the same programs installed here. I tried doing
the F8 thing and also couldnt open AVG here. It is at the
desktop but the hour glass goes on like if it wants to
open and it doesnt. DO I need to click something in the
MSCONFIG area to enable something. Oh, BTW, I was able to
do a ad-aware scan at my work (by opening it up in the
program files area) but forgot to try it at home to see
if that program works there. So when I get home, I will
try ad-aware there as well. thansk for your patience and
help.

Hi,

If the bug was in the System Volume Information folder, then it was encased
in a System Restore point. Purging the restore points will remove any virus
embedded in them (it's not like you would want to use a restore point that
has a virus in it anyways).

There are three ways to easily remove restore points (you should not do this
selectively).

1) Start/run cleanmgr.exe (disk cleanup), there is a "clean up" button on
the "more options" tab to remove all but the newest restore point.

2) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, go to settings and reduce the
amount of space allotted to System Restore. This will remove older restore
points, how many depends on how much space you require for a point, and how
much space you leave.

3) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, click the "turn off system
restore on all drives" box. This will eliminate all restore points. Once
reenabled, the system will begin creating new ones. You should reboot in
between doing this.
