On a computer I am working on for a friend I cannot get into safe mode. F8
only gets the screen to flash for a fraction of a second then continues
loading windows. Boot ini timeout is set at 30, same as mine.
Is there another way to safe start or another setting to change this?

Start menu - Select RUN

Enter:-

msconfig

then click OK

Click on "Boot.ini" or Boot" tab (depending on windows version)

Click on "Safe boot" to tick it.

Click "Apply"

Reboot

By setting the stuff in msconfig, it may force it to boot in safe mode
until you change it back, but that does not resolve the real problem -
F8 does not allow a successful boot into safe mode. But, maybe that
is good enough for what you want.

If you use Google to search for: xp won't boot in safe mode

There are plenty of results and maybe some apply to what you are
seeing. It would be good to know how you get it working properly when
you figure it out.

I had to laugh a bit... one guy can't get into safe mode, another guy
can't get out.

Thank you both for your assistance. I will use MSCONFIG for now to get into
safe mode as suggested to work on my origional problem then curse it later
as I try to fix this timeout problem.

It is my goal to FIX the issue. Hopefully, you will understand it
when you are done.

None of this "for now" stuff. I will fix it with extreme prejudice.

If you still have a problem, let us/me know.

When you press F8 try holding it down ; although mine should work by
tapping F8 , I have to keep it depressed .

Then you are/were probably not starting the tapping early enough, or
you were waiting too long between taps.

Danny WRONG I am, a experienced clicker, LoL, and you missed that I did
see the window momentarily open then close.

Google search found many warnings about using MSCONFIG to set safe mode.
Apparently some tricky viruses modify register settings and once in safe,
via MSCONFIG,. you can't get out, EVER, if that was the reason safe would
not open normally. I am NOT doing that, too risky.
It will be next week before I can get to the friends computer. will post
follow up then.

Hehehe : tried it both ways ( tapping every 1/10 second ) , only works
when I keep it depressed .
