My computer will not boot so I want to try and get into safe mode, but when I press F8, all I get is a DOS-type window asking which device I want to boot from - I presume this is a BIOS 'feature'

I cannot see anything in the BIOS that will alter this use of the F8 key so is there any other way I can access safe mode given that I can't get into XP at all at the moment

Thank

Jackie

If you've gotten to the point where you're being given the option
to press <F8>, you've already passed the point of entering the BIOS
and have started loading the OS. The resulting command-line menu is a
function of WinXP's Recovery Console.

In the extremely unlikely event that your PC's manual or the PC's
manufacturer's web site doesn't provide specific instructions for
entering the BIOS on your specific model of PC, try one or more of the
following:

How do I access my computer's setup (BIOS)
http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/2157.html

Wim's BIOS Page
http://www.wimsbios.com/

Accessing Motherboard BIOS
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

You should also be aware that it's very easy to render, at least
temporarily, your PC unbootable by making an incorrect change in the
BIOS. So be very careful.

I have onscreen now the result of the memory check then the next line says

F2: Setup F8: Boot menu F12: Network boo
followed by the Auto-detecting of drive

So when I press F8, as far as I can see, it's a BIOS function

Aha! - I waited a bit longer and got the F8 menu options

So, its F8 for booting options and once that is over it is then F8 for the menu. Really clever stuff :-

Thanks for respondin

Or Gigabyte boards. The correct timing for accessing the Windows XP
Advanced Options menu (therein Safe Mode option) is always immediately after
the *first restart*, when the black screen with [Press any key to start
CD....] changes display.
