The start of the problem was detailed here, for brevity sake:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt....&q=computer+problems!&rnum=3#48f0c0a559027c7f

I installed win2000 on the system but the system cannot see the video
adapter or audio adapters which are onboard although i can play music
from the cdrom. I tried redhat linux and it told me it cannot recognise
the monitor. while installing linux, it hangs at hardware detection
data file and doesn't go beyoond that.

eveytime i do post, i have to press F1 and it makes me scared. please,
who can help?

I forgot to add, the system board just refuses to load the vga and
audio drivers but loads the lan drivers. it tells me all the time to
set the color to 256 colors but i keep getting 16 and the system seems
not to even understand what 256 means.

1 get out the motherboard driver disk
2 Make sure the cmos battery is good
3 goto device manager and remove 'other devices' that appear there
4 put in driver disk or download the drivers from the mainboard
manufacturers web page and 'look for hardware changes' from 'actions'
in device manager. point to the drivers for each device.

Thanks. I'm going to try out your suggestion. this morning, the os
refused to see the usb flash drive and i used the drive yesterday?

If you have FC4/5 then boot the CD and run memtest/memtest86. You can
download memtest86.

IMO, it's either the memory, CMOS battery, PSU or Video that could be
failing. Generally, I suspect CMOS battery whenever the F1 setting occurs
after every boot.

The other culprit is bad memory. Here's a thing, XP needs better quality
memory than W98. With a bunch of different errors it sounds to me it's a
bios problem caused by memory or power.

A failing PSU could also cause such a multiple of errors. .

"funny characters on POST"?

If I understood your original google post you tried to add a new HD, got
errors, etc, eventually formatted the HD and installed XP but with errors?
It's a stronger memory issue or PSU issue, especially when you can't boot
from a CD. Run memtest for 4-6hours, I don't know how to diagnose a PSU
failing.

I've done a memtest with my linux, it returned 100% okay. i just bought
a new cmos battery this morning. When i fixed the battery, i still got
the crazy F1. i booted my win2k and shut it down. when i started it
again, i still got the F!(:!). I'll run the linux on the machine again
and if it gives the same hardware detection problem, i'll inform you.
by the way, my power supply is microATX and it was changed about 8
months ago, towards the beginning of this year, it's new. I went to
device manager and checked the mainboard it registered okay, the NT
legacy vidoe controllers and multimedia controllers were registering
okay.
Maybe after the linux install and the machine still hangs, i'll narrow
it down to a bios problem, video etc as you stated above because with
linux i don't have to rely on drivers from the manucfacturers. I've
been so busy yesterday, other matters came up and am just downloading
the pcchips drivers.
Well, am not losing anything to chance, i don't want it to be the bios
but i'll surely inform you of the results after am through.
thanks for your time.

left my computer for a cup of water, switched it on and it refuses to
POST. am right in going after the BIOS just weeks after a boot virus
alert?

left my computer for a cup of water,

did you get a lawyer?
switched it on

how do you turn on a cup of water?
and it refuses to POST.

just because you left your computer for the cup of water, what makes you
think its required to do what you demand?

am right in going after the BIOS

possibly, however it may be using protection....
just weeks after a boot virus
alert?

or not!...

Funny characters during bios boot, IMO suggests a problem with
hardware or bios, again main culprits memory, psu, motherboard or
peripherals.

Changing the CMOS battery should have cleared CMOS but if
you read your PCCHIPS manual it should tell you how to physically reset
your CMOS to factory settings using a jumper. Something like jumper on,
turn on PC for 2 seconds, remove jumper and reboot to factory shipped
state.

I'd disconnect everything except memory, cpu w/cpu fan and video. See if
you get still get the funny bios characters. This way you know its not
HD, CD or FD related. Then add your FD and test, followed by CD.
I you have 2 sticks of memory swap one out on different boots.

You could go with less to make sure you get the beeps. M/b should boot to
beeps without video but memory and with memory but no video. Make sure
video and memory are correctly seated.

8 month old power supply should be good but that's not a guarantee.
IRC, there's an issue about psu's supplying enough power along specific
rails, ie, +/_3 volt, +/- 12 volt, +/- 5 volt. The PIII boards need +/_ 5
while newer boards don't or something.

Nothing wrong with checking for boot virus. Formatting the hd may not
have removed the virus. There should be specific instructions for
removing the boot virus.

I had a SOYO m/b that crapped out on me in less than a 1 yr.
Wouldn't work with the memory maybe, anyway I swapped it out for an Intel
board I had laying around and never looked back.

you do have a wonderful sense of humor. i appreciate your help. i've to
buy a new Audio Modem riser card (AMR) or if i can't get one, i'll buy
a sound card and make do with my com1 modem.
have a nice day though. after that i'd try reseting the bios through
the setup file on the system board to see if the funny post messages
will go away.
thanks

changed cmos battery and activated AMP, that was the problem why it
refused to boot. cleared cmos and had to deactivate AMP.

single memory stick. except for FD i've removed CD and HD. will try it
out on FD + both.

fixed the video problem. think memory is okay, but well! bits and bytes
can't talk. will remove and place in memory stick again.

thanks. when i fix the sound problem, i'd reset bios and see what
happens.
