f(x) for totaling single cell

I haven't mastered the excel verbage yet, but does anyone know how to
keep a running total of a single cell, i.e. everytime you enter a new
number in a particular cell, then the corresponding formula simply adds
the value to the previous number and the sum becomes the new value or
total.

I hope excel is capable of doing this without an extended amount of
effort like having to create a database to reference.

I'm trying to create a log where the book/wooksheet would keep a tally
of numbers entered.

The fallacy is that everytime there is a calculate, you would increment your
running total, even it it wasn't appropriate.

You would need a formula using an intentional circular reference. To avoid
the error message you would need to go into Tools=>Calculate and and select
iteration. Set the max number to 1 This is an application level setting.

The alternative would be to use the change event with a macro.

Thanks for Tom's reply, unfortunately I do not seem to have the
suggested sub-menu calculate in the tools drop down box. I am using
Excel 97. Could it be called something else? If not, then perhaps I'll
try the macro suggestion.

J.E. McGimpsey replied to my posting of a couple of days ago, and I just
wanted to say thankyou for the clarification of another's reply to my
problem.

McGimpsey offered a great website/page that offered a solution along
with an explanation of an "accumulator cell", which is a term I hadn't
heard before, but it was right up my alley, so thanks so much for your
help.

I was naive to think that MS Excel would be fairly easy to learn
because it's laid out like the other MS Office programs, and the basic
navigation and operation is relatively easy, but obviously, the true
understanding of Excel and the use of it to its potential requires
knowledge of all the functions and formulas it has to offer.

Thanks again.
