F-Secure preventing XP Pro from loading - any suggestions ????

Ths is a bit of a strange one - all suggestions gratefully received
( as long as they are legal and decent, that is ;-) )

I was considering switching from Norton Anti-Virus,
after hearing that others are better at detection...
so, installed the latest "evaluation" version of F-Secure -
downloaded from the website

I also downloaded and ran the latest virus definitions -
in the form of fsupdate.exe

and found that XP would not re-boot :o
it would get part of the way, then freeze

the task bar and Quick launch bar were blank -
with no sign of even the Start button...

no icons in the system tray area - just the time

although the mouse cursor would move,
nothing on the screen would respond to
being clicked upon...

and Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't bring up the Windows Task Manager

A re-boot into "safe mode" allowed for uninstallation...
and I'm now back with Norton for the moment...
wondering what went wrong.

The OS is XP Pro - SP1, with all currently-available
patches from Windows Update installed -
( but no DOT-NET )

the "Show Windows version on desktop"
facility of Tweak-UI shows the version as:

Windows XP Professional
Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633(Service Pack 1)

Which version of F-Secure? Anti-Virus 2003 or Internet Security 20003?
Did you uninstall Norton before installing F-Secure? Having two anti-
virus programs running at the same time could cause the problems you
describe.

You probably needed to *completely* uninstall NAV before running any
other AV application. And that's not the easiest thing in the world. It
seems to dig itself well in.

I had the same problem when I had just disabled Norton. Complete
uninstall helped.

There is an unistall-utility in Symantecs site, if you cannot remove
NAV otherwise.

Part 2 ;-)

following the suggestions received:

located the Norton Uninstall tool on www.symantc.com
( it's called Rnav2003.exe )

and attempted a clean installation of F-Secure :-)

and had pretty much the same result :-(

the desktop appears... and that's the end of it...
pretty much the same as before

although the mouse cursor moves,
nothing on the screen responds to
being clicked upon...

and Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't bring up the Windows Task Manager

This is the latest version of F-Secure Anti-Virus -
the "30-day evaluation edition" downloaded from their website
with file name "fsav2003n.exe" - size 6.11MB

and what is it with forcing an immediate Internet connection
to download some 18MB, and petulantly uninstalling
if Internet connection is now allowed there and then ??

guaranteed to really infuriate:
* those on dial-up connections,
* those who have downloaded the file -
intending to install on a PC *without* Internet connection

why not just allow the full thing to be downloaded
manually, so the users can decide for themselves ??

if the full app is bought on CD-Rom,
does the installation require Internet connection to complete ??

( which is secondary to whether it actually works... )

Your best bet may be to contact F-Secure directly.

The 6.11MB file is the Backweb installer it still needs to connect and
download about 14MB of additional files to complete the installation.

No idea... You'll have to F-Secure that question. In you may be able to
request an eval version on CD.

Can't speak for F-Secure Anti-Virus 2003 but it's big brother F-Secure
Anti-Virus Client Security is working beautiful here.

Have you tried the 2004 F secure beta? It's working beautifully here....I'm
sold on the program. I've had horrible uninstall problems with Norton in
the past....search your registry real good.

[Snip]

Yes... It's basically FSAV Client Security minus the central admin
features and the F-Prot engine.

I didn't know that about the F Prot engine. I know 2004 beta Internet
Security that I'm 'evaluating' uses three engines. I guess one is
different? FSAV Client Security is the one I was interested in but I see I
can't buy just one license, right?

FSIS 2004 uses the Kaspersky, Orion & Orion Libra engines. I have no
idea what the Orion Libra engine does though.

To the best of knowledge... No. FSAV CS isn't intended for single
users.
