F-Secure cripples computer

One of the computers in my household has been crippled by a failed
uninstallation of F-Secure, bundled in a package from my ISP they call
Cogeco Security Services. Or something like that. What happenned was
the computer suddenly reset, as if somebody pressed the reset button
that doesn't exist. That was in the middle of uninstalling Cogeco
Security Services. The result, is that the computer cannot connect to
the internet any more. We can't figure out how to fix this; the
computer has to be able to access the internet in order to reinstall
the software, but it can't do that, so we can't reinstall it to
uninstall it again. We have tried running the uninstaller
"bwUnin-6.3.2.116-9867844L.exe" left behind in the WINNT folder but it
gives an error saying "Uninstall failed. Invalid Settings".

All attempts to open a web page in Internet Explorer result in "The
Page Cannot Be Displayed". DOS "ping google.ca" does not work. I have
tried "sfc /scannow" and reinstalling Internet Explorer, those do not
fix it either.

And is this computer actually running Win2k?
 
Yup, Windows 2000 Professional with all service packs and such
updates.

Try stopping all the F-Secure & BackWeb services in Services

Start
Run
type CMD
press enter
type
services.msc
press enter

Also look to see if anything is autorunning.

PS also find the F-Secure folder probably

C:\Program Files\F-Secure

and rename the folder to f-secure.old
 
Hmm.. Neither of those services seem to be there, and nothing appears
to be running from that folder.

I have recently been made aware that the computer is not showing up in
my router's DHCP list (IP addresses should be assigned by the router,
this computer's IP was not and it isn't in the list at all), although
the computer is able to access other computers on the network via
NetBIOS. Also, ipconfig is showing something weird..

169.x.x.x is the self assigned range.

Have you tried ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew

You could try manually setting the settings to check it will connect?
 
I tried setting the IP to an IP just out of the router's set range of
DHCP addresses, 192.168.0.101, but that didn't change anything. Still
couldn't get online.

Now.. That ipconfig thing you told me to do.. Well, something else I
don't understand has happenned..

Do the ipconfig /release when the address's are set to DHCP

When you set the address manually did you ensure you added the defualt
gateway (the routers address) and the DNS server address's?
 
You mean when it's set to get the IP automatically? It is, and was
when I tried that.

When I set it manually. I didn't do that. But I don't recall ever
having to do that before when setting up a manual IP on a computer on
my network..
Just tried setting up the computer to use the router as a gateway and
the DNS server my router tells me it's using. Unfortunately, no
change.

Went through all that uninstalling, restarting, and reinstalling,
still didn't do fix it. It's still doing the same weird IP 169.x.x.x
or whatever it was. No internet. I even tried restarting again, didn't
start working.

I'm also going to note that the computer is unable to access my
computer across the netwrok via HTTP (I host a web server on my
computer); only by whatever it uses to access shared files and
printers. So I couldn't set it up to use mine as a proxy server.

You mentioned a router. Have you tried powering down the router for about
60 seconds and then powering it up again?
 
Um, well, I would rather not do that, since I am hosting a web site on
a computer that does work fine. All the other computers in the house,
including wireless consoles and handhelds can get access to the
internet fine. Taking down the router would give me down time as well
as cause my IP address to change, which would cause all sorts of
undesirable longer lasting effects.


We just tried doing a repair from the Windows 2000 CD, that didn't fix
it either.

Well, in the end, we gave up on conventional methods and went and
reinstalled Windows entirely. It seems to work now. Lesson learned,
avoid Cogeco and F-Secure software.

We use F-Secure on all of our corporate computers throughout the entire
company and rarely have problesm, I think you were just unlucky. I certainly
would'nt recommend installing from the web though. Much better to have the
media or at least the install file locally.

Glad you're sorted though.
 
Cogeco's Internet Security program is AWFUL. Every computer I have
seen it installed on uses 50% of its resources to run the beast...
everything runs choppy, delayed and crashes all the time with this so
called 'security' program. Anyways, for anyone else who runs into this
problem you MUST call Cogeco, they will send you a 'special program'
to allow your computer to access the internet after 'uninstalled'
their security package. Aparently they can't even get the uninstaller
to work properly... Shameful.
