I just downloaded F-prot for dos. I can't figure out how to use it.
There are no instructions. I read the text files that came with it.

So sorry for such a newbie question.

Thanks in advance.

I am operating under Windows 98SE, so my experience is based on that.
If you're running Windows XP, things are probably different.

I can run F-Prot, from within Windows or I can boot up into DOS and run
it from there.

The latter option is useful if Windows itself is corrupted and won't
load. But there's also an advantage in running the program from DOS as
it can check those files which would otherwise be in use if you were
running the program from within Windows i.e. you get a more
comprehensive check.

But just for ease of use and to get you started quickly, you can run the
program from within Windows.

So, shut everything down that you don't need and go to the folder
(probably called c:\program files\F-prot) to locate the file called
F-prot.exe. (Maybe you might set up a short-cut to this for future
use.) Double click on the file, and a dos-like frame will appear on
your screen.

Within this frame your mouse will be inactive. You navigate using the
keyboard. To start with, the main keys you will use are the ESC key,
the Return key and the set of 4 arrow keys.

To begin the program, use the right arrow key to highlight the Start
button and press the Return key. When it finishes, you can hit the ESC
key successively to take you back up and out of the program.

What happens between starting and stopping will depend on how you've
configured things and what the program finds.

That should do for now to get you started.
