Hi Can't decide if this is the relevant group or not

Having gone for a few months thinking that the MS keyboard on my new Vista
computer wasn't working properly because the function keys weren't working,
I just discovered the F Lock key - and of course, hitting that key brings
the function keys into life!

Why on earth is the "normal" setting not the default.

Anyone know how to have this set as the default on boot up?

Thanks

Hi,

There's no BIOS option that enables it on boot up on any board I'm familiar
with. The F-lock function has become common with keyboards that either share
a function on those keys, or on laptops to keep the number of keys reduced.

Have you checked your keyboard driver settings?

That will not make any difference on POST - only once Windows has loaded.

Actually, it might. Don't recall if it was an MS or Logitech keyboard,
but on one where I had such a key and a driver setting, turning the
setting to "F Lock ON" did cause it to be on in POST - because it
toggled the default status on the keyboard itself.

Logitech used to provide a function where you could set the default F lock.

MS keyboards were supposed to hold whatever the last setting was, but I
don't know if they do that anymore.

There may be a F key user setting in Control Panel..

I think he was referring to a Windows driver having no
effect during POST. If the PC is switched off with power
to the PSU active, the keyboard should still be powered
by the standby +5V, and therefore maintain the F mode
toggle state. I have a wireless Logitech keyboard that
maintains the F mode state with the battery power.

Aah! As it happens, on returning to my computer today for the first startup
since posting my original query, I find that the last setting (i.e. with the
F keys working) has actually been remembered (It's a new MS keyboard). It
hadn't occurred to me that might happen.

Thanks to all replies.

The last MS keyboard that I had with an F Lock key that did NOT also
have a setting in the driver software did not remember the state, it
always booted with the FLock off. I hated that.

Was it connected through the PS/2 port? I'd hazard a guess that it will not
stick through PS/2, while it will through USB.

Wireless. I destroy wired keyboards and mice. I use an under-desk
keyboard/mouse drawer, and I frequently move my feet around. So I wind
up kicking, pulling and stretching any dangling wires.
