F Drive Settings/Folder Options Issue

I have an WD 320g external hard drive that I use for storage of all of my
files--pictures, videos, music, documents, etc. Recently I noticed a problem
with maintaining the folder views that I have had set for years. My
"pictures" folder had lost its filmstrip view all of a sudden. Well, I have
since fixed that issue, but have noticed that very recently, the settings
keep changing in a couple of my folders. Most specifically, my "pictures"
folder and the main view into my F drive itself. (I don't know quite what to
call it, but it's when I choose "my computer" and then double-click on MyBook
F drive--the main window that comes up and lists all of the folders contained
within my F drive.) Anyway, what would happen is that every time I changed
the view on that main window, the views in "my pictures" would change as
well. For instance, I want the main view to be "tiles" and the "my pictures"
to be "filmstrip" but whenever I change one the other automatically changed.
The one thing I noticed is that my F drive main window had a camera watermark
down in the corner, signifying that it was set as a picture-type folder, but
I did not set it that way. I went into the folder options and clicked the
button to "reset all folders" and now when I double-click and open my F
drive, the main page has a music note in the bottom signifying music files I
guess. My question is this, how do I set my F drive to be just a normal
all-types-of-files drive, like my C drive is? I never set it to be specific
to one type of file, so how did it get caught up in being set that way? I've
tried looking around, but since this isn't a normal folder to change the
"customize" tab, I don't know how to tell the computer that I want this drive
like my regular system hard drive, like it was before. I do notice that my
external drive has an "autoplay" tab on it in the properties tab, which my C
drive (main computer internal hard drive) does not. Did some sort of Windows
update change the settings on my external hard drive or something?

Please...the Reader's Digest version next time.

Each time you attach your external hard drive Windows considers it to be
a new drive with default settings. It does not remember whatever
settings you had for it the last time it was attached.

Sorry my explanation was too long for you, Mr. Grey--most people who actually
want to help people on these sites like as much information as possible.
Your response was not helpful at all. I don't understand what you mean by
"each time you attach your external hard drive. . ." because my external hard
drive is always attached to my computer. I do not disconnect it and carry it
around town with me. It stays attached to my desktop computer at all times.
Also, in my "long-winded" question--the main question is, how do I change
the main settings of my external hard drive so that its main window is not
defaulted to "music" or "pictures", but defaulted to a normal view style for
all file types, similar to the C drive set up?
Thank you.

Have you looked for a hidden file in the root of the drive called
desktop.ini or autorun.inf?

Hi, thank you for the suggestion. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "the
root of the drive", but I opened the explorer window for my F drive and then
under the options I chose to show me hidden files and folders and also to
show me hidden system files as well. The following files appeared:
ArcDeviceInfo
IO.SYS
Autoexec.bat
config.sys
msdos.sys
also the folders "recycler" and "System volume information" appeared, but
"system volume information" will not let me open it--it gives the error that
it is not accessible, access denied. No desktop.ini or autorun.inf appeared.
Am I looking in the correct place?

Wow; until you can put some grammar effort into that, it's almost
totally unreadable and very hard to understand. Do something, anything,
to make posts such as this readable to the masses if you want good
responses.
Bulltet points often help. Separate out questions. Separate
opinions from facts. Etc.
I made it thru the first few sentences and quit reading; too much
work to figure out what you're getting at.

Well, gee, then if you're not bright enough to read, then obviously I don't
want your help--why bother posting??
It's not like I can delete the post now, although I'd like to since everyone
seems more concerned with critiquing rather than helping.

Here's the "reader's digest" simplified version for those of you with short
attention spans. . .

My external hard drive shows a music note down in the bottom corner of the
explorer window when opened. How do I change that so that it does not show
anything in that bottom corner??

A newsgroup is no place for a tutorial on scripting. Do what I would do:
Search the web.

Wow, silly me thinking someone familiar with Microsoft might be able to help.
Didn't know the issue was that deep. Not familiar with "scripting", thought
this was a windows problem that could be solved. Did search the web prior to
posting here. Discussion Group administrator--please remove my post.

Wow! I can't believe the grief you got here. Your post made sense to me.
Apparently for some reason your view settings which had worked for YEARS
on your F: drive inexplicably stopped remembering their settings and you
want them fixed. Unfortunately i cannot help you with your problem. Some of
the
posters here can be difficult for no reason. Good luck

Thanks ManyBeers--nice to hear someone else could understand my problem--I
was beginning to think I was on another planet with what I've been getting
from these "helpers."

If you still need help and can't get any here try this link:

There are several experts who should be able to help you out. You may have
to join
to post. Forums link is where you head to.

I have a Dell Dimension 520, with vista premium. Got it with 350Gb hard drive. Still under warrenty
3 weeks ago I started to lose 10-15 free GB from my OS C hard drive. Each day the free GB would go up and down (with no major changes in the operation of the computer.) It is now down to 15 free GB on the C drive. It was 190 three weeks ago. Dell says it must be a spyware or malware but they
can't find it.
When I open my C drive I see ArcDevice Info, unknown to me, but someone at my hospital said this may be constantly backing up your back-ups and causing the free GB's to do down.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to stop this vicious cycle of losing my free GB's from OS (C).

I'm not sure about your problem Mr. Lefleur, but I wanted to let you know
that you posted within a pretty old post. You may want to repost in a new
thread so that it is more visible to people that might be able to help you
out. The only reason I saw your post is that I am the originator of the
thread you posted in and got a notification that a reply had been posted in
my thread. I hope someone helps you out!

Did you check into the backup state of affairs, then? If there could be some
backup software on it that you don't know about, you need to find out. I
couldn't find much out about ArcDevice from a quick check on the web. Is
this a file or a folder? How big is it, and does the size change?

Did anything else happen, start happening, or did you make any changes to
your system three weeks ago?

I'd recommend installing Agent Ransack
(http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack) and searching for new, large files.
I don't know about its compatibility with Vista, though - this is an XP
newsgroup, so you may also benefit from reposting your question in one of
the Vista groups. If you do, you should also start your own, new thread
there.

Or, for a more visual display of the sizes of your folders and files, try
SequoiaView freeware -
http://w3.win.tue.nl/nl/onderzoek/onderzoek_informatica/visualization/sequoiaview//.
The site says this *does* work under Vista.

Also, try a "chkdsk /r", or its Vista equivalent, on your C:\-drive, in case
the system is misreporting its free space.

Lastly, I'd suggest that you perform your own malware checks - Spybot,
SuperAntispyware, MalwareBytes and AdAware spring to mind, as well as your
current, up to date anti-virus program. (You *do* have one of those...?)
