Extremely Weird Win2K Problems

My wife's machine runs win2k, and it has been acting
extremely bizarre of late.

1) Frequently (but randomly) it is impossible to log out.
It happens on all accounts. There are no applications
currently running. If you wait a long time, you see no
"application not responding" dialogs. I've gone in and
shut down all the services that are able to be shutdown and
that doesn't work. It is as if the entire shut down
portion of the operating system simply returns without
doing anything. This is extremely frustrating and we
cannot figure out what is going on. We've run antivirus
many, many times with properly updated signatures. The
machine is firewalled.

2) Sometimes the CD drive decides to try to start when
it's not being asked to. I don't mean autoplay, I mean
3:30 in the morning, typing away, and the drive light comes
on and it spins a little bit. May be related to the
no-log-out but I don't know for certain.

These are the two main weird issues, though #1 is
absolutely the top most issue. This is driving us nuts.

What anti-virus software are you running, is it up to date, and when's the
last time you scanned your machine? Have you scanned your machine for
spyware/malaware using Adaware or SpyBot S&D?. When's the last time you
cleaned up (temp files/folders, IE cache, defragged, chkdsk)?
