I began using roadrunner broadband earlier this year and
it worked fine until 3-4 months ago. Nothing new happened
to the computer and nothing new was loaded into the
computer so it remains a mystery why it is so slow. I
have called Roadrunner but their diagnostics indicated it
was in the Explorer. Their software was fine. I have a
Compaq Presario 5441 with Windows 98. When I am online I
can type and the results of my typing will not show for
over 15-20 seconds. However, I am typing here and this
works normally. I also cannot run maintenance wizard
unless I am in safe mode. I have tried ending all tasks
except Explorer and Systray and I have shut off the auto-
run feature of my cd-rom. Nothing works.

My first broadband was Road Runner. Then, Cox cable replaced Road Runner
with their own server.
I've helped several people with their connections, both DSL and Cable. It's
been my experience that when an ISP can't discover the connection problem,
they tend to put the blame somewhere else rather than try to solve the
problem.

First off, make sure you have a good connection from the cable box outside
your house to your computer. Run a dedicated line from that box to your
computer. Do not have any other devices running off that cable. No splitters
to other TVs, etc. I notice a BIG drop in signal strength when I re-connect
a TV to the same cable.

I've had several friends where the cable company said it didn't matter. At
the threat of loosing a customer, the cable company sent a tech person to
the house who then ran a direct line to the computer which fixed the
problem.

If you have a direct line to your computer, have your cable provider come to
your house and make sure you have a good strong signal to your computer.

If so, then, diagnose your computer.
