extremely slow logon and slow down

Hello, I am a new computer user and don't know much of
anything about fixing, upgrading, maintenance, etc. When
I log on each day, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes before I
can click on anything. It freezes up most everytime 15 to
20 minutes and I get a lot of "Not Responding" error
messages. Please help me understand what is happening and
any advice on how to correct it. It makes me not even
want to use my computer because it takes so long to work
on anything.
