EXTREMELY Frustrating XP/Win98 Networking Problem

I have a cable modem connected to a router that shares
the internet access across 4 ports. One port is for my
computer running XP, one port is for my sisters computer
running windows 98, and two ports are open. Last night a
few of my friends brought their computers over for some
online games, and I didn't have enough ports to go around
so I unplugged my sisters computer. When I plugged it
back in today, it can still access my computer through
the network, but it can no longer access the internet.

I didn't change a single setting. I've done everything I
can think of including unplugging everything and
restarting, double checking that DHCP was enabled on both
machines, and reconfiguring the router. Still no
internet connection.

What happened, and is this going to happen everytime I
unplug the ethernet cable from the port?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Brian,

this should not happen, and many people plug and unplug their
computers all the time, particularly portable computers.

First, power down the router and power it up again.

What happens when you try accessing the Internet through the
problem computer? Do internal connections work, i.e. file and
folder sharing between the two computers? What is the DHCP range
of the router? What is the IP address of the problem computer?

When you try and access the internet through the problem
computer (running Windows 98), all you get is the "page
cannot be displayed" error message regardless of what
address you type in.

File and folder sharing still functions between the two
computers, the only problem is that the second computer
(Windows 98) cannot access the internet.

Checking the Router Log, there are two devices that have
been assigned IP addresses:

"unknown" at 192.168.1.101 with mac address 00-a0-d2-1b-
d1-2f, and my computer (Windows XP) at 192.168.1.100 with
mac address 00-08-a1-2a-5d-5e.

I do not know if the "unknown" connection is for the
router or the other computer.

Also I cannot remember how to check the ip address of the
problem computer.

Help is greatly appreciated, I need to figure this out as
soon as possible.

I ran winipcfg on the Windows 98 machine and it has been
assigned the IP address 192.168.1.101 which sounds
correct to me, since the XP machine is set to
192.168.1.100. However when running winipcfg the adapter
was set to PPP instead of the Ethernet card. I don't
know if this is somehow related to the problem, but I
believe there is some error in the settings on the 98
machine since it has the correct IP address but still
cannot access the internet.

Does anyone know what the correct settings should be? I
do have DHCP enabled.

Thanks for any help.

Brian,

one way to continue would be to remove all networking components
from the Windows 98 computer, reboot, then install the network
components again. For Internet access you need a Windows network
client, the network adapter driver and the Microsoft TCP/IP
protocol. The IP settings should be to automatic, as the
computer obtains its address through DHCP.

We're not exactly in the right newsgroup now, as the problem is
apparently only in the Windows 98 computer and has nothing to do
with Windows XP. If we cannot solve the problem quickly, you may
want to ask again in a newsgroup that is not Windows XP specific
and deals with Windows networking.
