Extremely dumb question about Outlook 2007 and Exchange...

I have been using Outlook 2007 for two years now through an account with
Mailstreet.com (a Microsoft Exchange Server), but my domain is being used by
spammers to an astounding degree and I have taken the decision to drop my
website altogether. I have turned to GMAIL which is a breeze and would like
to use it with OUTLOOK 2007. To do that, do I need to go through a MS
Exchange or can I use Outlook as a standalone? The reason of my question is
this: what will happen after I terminate my Mailstreet account... will I be
able to use Gmail with Outlook, retain my calendar, my contacts, etc...
without having to pay a monthly fee? Thank you for your help!
 
your license for outlook will expire but outlook will keep working -
basically, you'll be using an unlicensed (aka pirated) copy.
 
Thanks Diane, but please allow me to disagree! I have PURCHASED the Outlook
2007 Software as part of the full Office Suite. Do you mean to tell me that
after a while, my purchase turns into a PIRATED copy? If so, then why would I
bother to purchase software products from Microsoft? This is nonsense to me!
Besides, right now my Outlook is still working. What could possibly expire is
my agreement with Mailstreet to provide me with their Exchange server, but
only when I decide to do so. Why would my Outlook software expire?! On the
other hand, for the brave souls ready to help me, I would like to add this. I
have added a new profile and set up a new account working with Gmail.
However, it will not send any messages... Thank you in advance!
 
if you purchased the suite, then its yours. I thought you got it from
mailstreet as part of the exchange mail acct and that why you asked about
the using it with gmail. (most exchange hosting accts include a copy of
outlook)

you just need to add gmail to the profile (either pop or imap). Assuming you
are using cache mode with mailstreet, move your calendar etc to a pst. Do
not remove the mailstreet acct until after you move everything as you will
lose access to the ost that holds the mail, calendar etc.
 
Thanks for explaining... now I get it! While it's true Mailstreet provides
you with a free copy, I had already purchased Office on my own... That means
I am not a pirate... Good! If I understand correctly, I should be able to use
Outlook 2007 as a standalone which would access my Internet connection
without the need for Exchange. I'll follow your advice with the PST files.

gmail's web pages contain a full explanation of how to configure Outlook to
use the gmail servers.
