I can't start up xp professional in safe mode or normal or ANYTHING. It will stop loading right after the xp screen with the little bar moving from left to right. It goes away like usual....... then it doesnt finish loading. This is driving me NUTS. I have tried everything I can possibly try.... except rewriting the MBR.lol I do have win. 98 on a different hard drive in the same computer. Except my xp drive is NTFS and 98 in FAT 32. Soooo I cant access my xp hard drive! I dont have a automated recovery floppy made so I cant "recover". I really dont know what I am going to do....... Ive tried "fixboot" off the xp cd but it doesnt do anything helpful. I have lots of home videos on it so I really cant lose it all. I need suggestions. Thanks for any help.

p.s. I have spent countless hours trying everything i know....... with no luck arrrr

Have you tried booting from winxp disk, you may have to modify yr boot
sequence in bios, and doing a repair?

Hi Jim,

Have you tried booting to the recovery console and typing:
chkdsk /r (it will take a while)?

type chkdsk /? to see the options.

Good luck

You can do a repair install of winxp, using inst.disk

in the recovery console........ normally when i went into it and typed "1" for the operating system it, of course, asked for the password and i always hit "enter" because i dont have a password...... its just nothing. it always works this way. BUT i tried a manual restore earlier and then AFTER i did that i went back into the recovery console and i just hit "enter" for the password and it WORKED FINE. but somehow (after i tried recovering to feb. 21, 2004 it doesnt accept just nothing for the password........ obviously i didnt have a password last month *haha* this is really bad cuz i cant do anything now.... i dont know wat to do....... any ideas?

The password is the Administrator account password

It won't do a repair install.......... all i can do is totally reinstall it, which will probbly delete most of my files. i was able to get to "C:\" in the recovery console so i could not del/copy files but i can "chkdsk /p" and "chkdsk \r" and "chkdsk". All of those procedures found errors and fixed them and I also was able to run "fixboot" which also found errors in the boot record and fixed it, but xp still wont start in ANY mode i try!! (just to inform you that things somehow got worse.......then this brought me back to where i was originally, except the password ordeal (humbug)) im gonna see if i cant somehow get the password....... somehow lol anyway im still struggling on win. 98 (the hard drive FROM our old compaq) well that brings me up to date...... its not looking good is it?? oh ya.... the administrator password IS nothing (i just would hit "enter" for the password since i dont have one.) there was a prevous owner to this computer, so im gonna ask him if he EVER had a password...... what i am thinking is that when i system restored in the recovery console and then got into xp...... i might have moved the files from the wrong YEAR........ im not sure because this computer isn't that old really. anywho... thanks for any help in advance p.s. i hope i can get to the bottom of this without taking extreme measures!!!

Hi Jim,

You do not have to enter the recovery console (or know the
administrator password) to do a repair install.

Just boot from the CD, press enter, then press F8 to accept the EULA.
Windows will detect your damaged system and offer to repair-install
it. (Remove_all_peripherals from your system and leave only the
monitor, the keyboard and the mouse)

Accept and the program will install a new OS in place of the old one.
Your installed programs won't work, you'll have to reinstall them;
however your data (such as your video files) should be preserved.

Once you're back in business again do a back up of your data in DVD,
CD or removable hard drives with imaging programs like Ghost or
Acronis.

This link explains further the steps to take to make a repair install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

(Just_do not_format anything so you don't lose your data)

If you still have problems doing the procedure, and if you're
comfortable handling hardware, try taking out the harddrive and
putting it as slave on another computer so you can get at your data
and back it up.

Good luck

i did that but there is the folder called "stephen hale" (which is the previous owner) and the "access is denied"....... so what do i do?? i believe it has about 9 gigs in it..... pictures and movies etc........ so my hard drive is about 13 gigs used up (outta about 38 avaliable) so im gonna have to format and reinstall. any way to "hack in"??
