Extreme delay when program opens window

Hi folks,

I'm experiencing a strange behavior of my Windows XP Pro
here - perhaps anyone can help me:

After several hours of non-stop system use, the starting
of any program suddenly becomes a rather tedious task -
the program itself loads perfectly fine, but once it
tries to open a window on screen or change its contents
massively, up to half a minute will pass where the
program will stop responding completely before it
continues.

Afterwards, the program will work normally until the next
major window redraw, when it will freeze again for
another major amount of time.

Did anyone else have a similar problem and found a way to
solve it?

Best regards in advance,

Manfred Lemke

I'm quite sure that the hdd space or possible disk
defragmentation are not the cause of the delay; the files
are loaded swiftly into the computer's memory.

As stated, the only problem I have after several hours of
a running system (24 hours non stop at least!) is the
sudden delay of programs when they open new windows or
completely redraw their content. Afterwards, they perform
smoothly, so it could indeed be a problem with the RAM,
although it persists even after I closed all programs.

How could I possibly find the cause of this trouble?

Best regards,
