Hello,
In helping a friend with Win2000 (he knows very little and
I am a WinMe user)I have questions.

1.How do I extract files from a zip download without using
WinZip? (This as a result of my wishing to download
HijackThis which specifically excludes using WinZip in
order to avoid loss of backups.)

2.I learn that msconfig can be installed. Apart from the
Antivirus software which items are the minimum required
for start-up?

3.I anticipate finding many unnecessary items in the start-
up list. Am I correct in thinking that merely unchecking
these will, unless selective startup is chosen, not
prevent them starting up on the next boot?

4.Is System Restore available on Win2000?

5.In 'Search' using rb* I can find no registry backups.
Does Win2000 not create backups?

6.Will the 'Run' command SCANREG /FIX have relevance for
Win2000?

7.I read that Win2000 is normally slower to startup and
shutdown than is WinMe and that it's 'Hibernation' feature
does not use power. Is this a recommended choice on
shutdown? If so do settings in Power Options have to be
made?

Thank-you.
Ben.

You'll need a zip management program of some kind, since there's nothing
included in Win2000. There are various free and low-cost options
available, but I don't understand how downloading HiJackThis excludes the
use of WinZip. In fact, Merijn.org specifically recommends the use of
WinZip in seceral places. Your statement about loss of backups doesn't
seem to make sense.
2.I learn that msconfig can be installed. Apart from the

MSconfig can be installed -- preferably the WinXP version. The copy I
have includes the help file and came from here:
http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm. For controlling startup
programs, I much prefer Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel from
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml. The start-up items on my system are
all things I explicitly installed. Operating system components are
typically handled differently and won't usually show up here. Managing
system services requires a fair amount of research.

up list. Am I correct in thinking that merely unchecking

I don't really use MSconfig, so I don't have the answer to this one.
4.Is System Restore available on Win2000?
No.

5.In 'Search' using rb* I can find no registry backups.
Does Win2000 not create backups?

It does not create registry backups automatically, although there are ways
to do that. When the registry is backed up, it's either included in a
system state backup or the files will be copies to \WINNT\repair\RegBack.
The original set of registry files is copies to \WINNT\repair when the
system is installed.
6.Will the 'Run' command SCANREG /FIX have relevance for
Win2000?

No. Win2000 does not have scanreg.
7.I read that Win2000 is normally slower to startup and

I don't use hibernation and have no first-hand experience with it, but
I've read that it isn't very reliable. There have been reports that some
systems have problems when they are awakened. For your specific
situation, you'll probably just have to try it and see how it goes.

Hello Gary and thanks for your responses.
Re #1.

This is the site which makes mention of WinZip. But I will
go to the Merijn site for the download. The Win2000 op. sys
computer, from which I am going to try and eradicate a
particularly nasty pop-up which calls itself "Messenger
Service", has WinZip installed. So I will use it.

Re #2.
I will explore Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and, since
you say that Operating system components are "handled
differently", I hopefully won't be confronted with
critical operating system items.

Anyway, Gary, thanks for the feedback.

Ben.

The warning on that page is not to run HiJackThis directly from inside
the zip file without explicitly extracting it. (When you do this, the
program is implicitly extracted to a temp folder.) So long as you extract
it to a folder first, there's no problem.

Thanks, Gary.

The particularly nasty pop-up which calls itself Messenger Service is part
of the operating system. If you issue
net send %computername% test
from the command line, you will get a Messenger Service dialog. It sounds
like you are getting Messenger Service spam, and need to block the Messenger
Service ports at the firewall, or disable the Messenger Service (which I
cannot say I recommend. See the Knowledge Base article at
<<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[ln];330904>>.
