Extracting audio

Hi ... Newbie here. I did search for this but didn't exactly find what I was
looking for, SO ~ here goes.

How do I extract audio from a video clip, for use elsewhere in my movie?

I tried right-clicking on the audeio portion of the clip in the timeline and
choosing copy - thinking I could paste it elsewere - in my collections or on
my hard drive - but that doesn't seem to work. What I have is a home movie,
and there is a portion of audio in one of my clips I'd like to put at the
start of the movie, with the title, before the music starts. Can someone give
me a clue? Thanks!

Drag the movie to the...Audio/Music track.
Go to...File / Save Movie File. The result
will be a .wma audio file.

Then you can import the new .wma audio file /
drag it to the timeline and move your pointer
over the track until you see the double red
arrows...dragging them will allow you to trim
the clip. And...the hand icon will allow you to
drag (move) the clip (left or right) to the position
you require.

Hi John,

Question - when you say 'drag the movie file' - you mean, from a folder
where it's saved on my hard drive into the audio track a new [separate] blank
MM project - ??

[just clarifying that you don't somehow mean to drag the movie from within
the project itself into the audio track... I know that sounds weird but ~]

Thanks ~ Alysia M.

Oops - sorry - I think I get it

Open a new project, and drag the clip from the collections area into the
audio track ... then save and import as you described

Is that it? sorry for the confusion.

Alysia

Actually, you can do it either way.

My thought was to import the movie file
into Movie Maker...File / Import Into
Collections...(like a new project)...then
drag it to the Audio/Music track and save
the resulting .wma file to a folder on your hard
drive so it would be available for future use.

However...for a one time use...yes, you
could drag the existing movie file to the
Audio/Music track and use it in the current
project. If you need to mute the sound on the
current movie just right click it in the time
line and choose "mute".

John,

I just wanted to say thanks!! I never would've figured that out by myself &
it's perfect.

FWIW - I did try to drag the video clip just to the audio track within my
project - that was the first thing I tried and it didn't work, but it totally
works with a new, blank project, saving it, then importing that audio file to
the original project. Thanks again.

*woohoo I'm makin' movies!* [sorry, can't contain my excitement] ;)
