Extracting Audio from Video Using "Cool Edit Pro"

I've just run across an odd problem, and wonder if anyone else has seen
it.

When I use "Cool Edit Pro" to extract audio from the DV-AVI (NTSC) file
saved by MovieMaker during capture from DV tape, the pitch of the
extracted audio is shifted low by about 6.5 semitones.

Anyone else using Cool Edit (or Adobe equivalent) see this phenomenon?

Martin

ps - Is there a way to have MovieMaker directly save a separate wav or
mp3 file of the audio?

BTW, it does not seem to be a setting problem in Cool Edit, as it
extracts audio from other AVI files without problems. But just to be
safe, I uninstalled and did a fresh new install of CEP, then got the
same results as before.

=============================
In Windows Movie Maker 2.1....
To save only the audio track of a video clip...
drag the video to the "Audio/Music" track.
Then go to...File / Save Movie File / ect...ect......

This will result in a .wma audio file. Be sure
to drag the clip all the way to the left on the
timeline or you will have dead air at the
beginning.

John,

I'm curious now - is the audio that is saved with the DV-AVI (NTSC)
file already in wma format? That might explain why Nero Vision Express
produces distorted audio on DVDs made from MovieMaker AVI files - wma
is not all that universally readable. I'm not sure if Cool Edit reads
wma, either.

Sorry, I have no idea.

I verified that Cool Edit reads wma, by just opening a few of them. I
guess the Moviemaker/Nero interface problems will just be one of those
great unsolved mysteries.

I'm planning to upgrade soon, from Cool Edit to Audition and from Nero
6 to Nero 7. I'll re-run these experiments and see if any of the
compatibility problems go away.

BTW, that's a good trick for saving just the audio, and as far as I can
tell it's not documented in the MM help files (or the Zero to Hero
book). I did it a little differently, because by the time I got home
I'd forgotten the specific instructions. Rather than dropping the
video file directly onto the audio timeline (I think that's what you
recommended), I put the video in normally, copied the audio to the
lower audio timeline, and then deleted the original video clip to leave
only second audio. Then I saved it - worked fine, thanks!

Thanks for the update.

Your copy/paste idea was inventive
but dragging the video clip to the
audio/music track...accomplishes
the same result.

Cheers.
