Assuming you want to bridge the gap between Movie Maker and Audacity, use
TMPGEnc to rip the audio from a DV-AVI (type I or II) or WMV file to a WAV
file to use in Audacity.
Back to MM2 is easy as it uses the WAV file.
There's a link to TMPGEnc on my Setup > Other Software page...

thanks but the problem is that movie maker does not read 8 bit audio
probperly from the timeline, it does read it properly from the collections,
what a lame program, Bill
thanks, I tried TMPEGnc and it does not open the .avi video files I have that
have uncompressed 8 bit audio, I'm sorry to say I am going to have to use
virtual dub and divx, movie maker reads the audio properly from the
collections but not from the timeline, that is rediculous. thanks for your
help, your website looks very good too.
Virtual Dub would be my second choice... but it needs a type II DV-AVI file,
an added step if you're starting with a type I... maybe a needed step in
your case.

I use various programs, but they are not free. AVS Converter (about $30) is
easy and fast...import the video, click on edit, and save audio in
Uncompressed PCM Wav format. Or sometimes I use Total Recorder to record
the sound through my sound card into a quality of my choosing. And also
Camtasia (video editing and screen capture software) is good to bring in the
video and edit the audio (up/down..shorten etc) and save as a wav file also.
Since I don't use the 'free' ways I can only suggest these as good
solutions.
